Synopsis: An entertaining picture book that teaches the importance of asking for permission first as a young girl attempts to escape the curious hands that want to touch her hair.
It seems that wherever Aria goes, someone wants to touch her hair. In the street, strangers reach for her fluffy curls; and even under the sea, in the jungle, and in space, she’s chased by a mermaid, monkeys, and poked by aliens…until, finally, Aria has had enough!
Author-illustrator Sharee Miller takes the tradition of appreciation of black hair to a new, fresh, level as she doesn’t seek to convince or remind young readers that their curls are beautiful–she simply acknowledges black beauty while telling a fun, imaginative story.
My thoughts…
Finally a book about the curly/coily girl experience. As an African-American woman, this has happened to me way too often to count. Whether it’s my natural or relaxed texture, it will amaze you how often people invade my personal space to touch my hair. Aria’s experience isn’t much different. Miller presents boundaries and the importance of permission ingeniously and in a manner that can be easily understood by any reader.
Miller pulls double duty here. Her illustrations are both colorful and expressive. This is a book that many girls with curly, coily, and various other textures can easily relate to. This book can help parents and teachers have a discussion about boundaries and personal space with their children/students. This book’s lesson extends beyond just hair. It’s versatility really breaths life into the text. I loved the “About this Book” at the beginning and the “Author’s Note” at the end. This is a great book to add to your bookshelf.
My rating…
