My thoughts…

This was such a fun loving book. The story was very inspiring and will entertain kids as they read it. Most of us have come up against an obstacle that we had to overcome. The life lessons here show how Sofie grapples with failure and what does she do about it–push through or give up. This is such a great life lesson for kids to learn and sports are a great way to connect the dots.

Here are a few things that stuck out to me. While the story is easy for me to follow, having a larger more playful font is more visually appealing when you read side by side with your child at bedtime. Additionally, grandparents may struggle to read it with ease considering the font size. Lastly, having more of a show not tell approach will minimize the quantity of text (which was somewhat bulky) and rely more on the illustrations to enhance the story.

Shorter’s illustrations were delightfully colorful. They came alive on each page. The message will resonate with kids and parents alike. It serves as a valuable teaching tool. Do you push through or do you give up? Well, I hope the reader taps into their inner Sofie to answer that question.
